The work consisted in the preparation of a project for the decommissioning and recovery of the controlled dump and landfill where the municipality of Piracicaba (400,000 inhabitants) disposed of waste produced between 1977 and 2007.
The main activities of the project were: definition of the units and infrastructure to be maintained, geometric reconformation, revitalisation of the leachate and biogas collection and management system, revitalisation of the rainwater collection and management system, implementation of the final cover, environmental and geotechnical monitoring; and post-decommissioning measures.
The work carried out by the team consisted of the survey of the landfill's history; specification of drilling, preparation of the rehabilitation project, stability assessment, preparation of measures for the decommissioning and environmental and geotechnical monitoring.
